Sulfasym contains 400 mg Sulfamethoxazole and 80 mg Trimethoprim in each ml and is milky white
coloured Oral Suspension when shaken.
Sulfasym Oral Suspension is an enhanced sulfonamide combination based on balanced ratio of
sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Sulfamethoxazole blocks folic acid biosynthesis, via substituting
the para-amino benzoic acid molecule in dihydrofolic acid that is required for the nucleic acid
synthesis and cell proliferation, Trimethoprim acts via blocking transformation of dihydrofolic acid to
tetrahydrofolic acid. Thus, a synergistic bacteriostatic activity and sometimes bactericidal effect occur
on sensitive pathogen bacteria and a broad antibacterial spectrum against most of the gram positive
and gram negative bacteria is ensured.
Bacteria sensitive to sulphonamide + trimethoprim combination are:
– Gram positive aerobic bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus sp., Actimomyces sp.,
Corynebacterium sp., Listeria monocytogenes, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae,
– Gram negative aerobic bacteria: Enterobacteriaceae (E.coli, Salmonella sp., Klebsiella sp., Proteus
sp., Yersinia sp.), Pasteurella sp., Haemophilus sp., Actinobacillus sp., Bordetella sp.,
-Anaerobic bacteria: Some of Clostridium sp., Bacteroides sp., Fusobacterium sp., Chlamydia sp.,
Moderately sensitive bacteria are certain Mycobacterium sp., some Nocardia sp.
Rickettsia sp., Leptospira sp., Pseudomanas aeroginosa, Mycoplasma sp. are considered as resistant.
After administration of Sulfamega Oral Suspension via oral route it is readily absorbed from the
intestines and reaches maximum level in the blood between 1-4 hours and preserves the effective
concentrations up to 12 hours. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim are mainly excreted through renal
way and limited amount of it is excreted through bile and faeces.
INDICATIONS FOR USE
It is used for the treatment of infections caused by the above listed sensitive bacteria in lamb & calf
and turkey & broilers.
In broilers and turkey; colisepticemia, salpingitis, cholera, coryza and staphylococcus infections and
other infections caused by the other sensitive bacteria.
Lamb and calves (non-ruminating); bacterial diarrhoea, gastroenteritis, colisepticemia,
bronchopneumonia, calf diphtheria and omphalitis.
AMOUNTS TO BE ADMINISTERED AND ADMINISTRATION ROUTE
Unless otherwise is not recommended by veterinarians the pharmacological dosage of the products in
lamb and calve is 1 ml for 15 kg/day body weight and the dose is divided into 2 portions for morning
and afternoon. The treatment should continue for 3-5 days. In chickens and turkey 5 ml product should
be added into the daily water consumption for each 100 kg body weight. (100 cc product/250 lt
drinking water). The medicated dilution should be prepared daily. The treatment should continue for
SPECIAL CLINICAL INFORMATION AND WARNINGS FOR TARGET SPECIES
Due to its negative effect on the rumen flora it shouldn’t be used for the systemic treatment of
ruminating calves. Do not restrict water during Sulfonamide therapy. Its effective concentration period
is 12 hours thus it is recommended that the daily dose should be divided into two portions. It may
reduce water consumption in birds. Dosage adjustment requires extra care in new born calf and lambs.
